How to Complete This Logbook
Boat, Gear & Contact Details Form
To be completed by the Concession Holder or Authorised Agent and posted to AFMA with the first batch of logsheets. A second Boat, Gear & Contact Details form is located in the middle of the logbook. Please complete and submit this second form if any major boat and/or gear detail changes have occurred, or boat contact details have changed.
Completing the Log Page
• When fishing record all details on a shot by shot basis.
• Do not combine catches from multiple shots.
• Each log page is designed to be used over several days fishing.
• If you are fishing Purse Seine and Pole method in the same trip please use a separate log page for each method.
• Please begin each trip with a new page.
• The concession holder or authorised agent who is signing the log page must be the master of the boat (Skipper) when this fishing operation took place.
• If there is more than one master of the boat (skipper) on board the boat for any one trip, then each skipper must complete and sign a separate log page for the fishing operations for which they had control.
Page Header
Enter boat name and distinguishing symbol.
Method Used
Indicate whether you are purse seine or pole fishing by ticking the appropriate box.
Trip Dates
On the first sheet used for a trip record the date of departure, on the last page used for the trip record the date of trip end (returned to port).
Fishing Details
Note the time zone in which the boat is operating and for each shot record the following:
• Date of each shot or date of the day where an NF code is recorded.
• Record the NF code that represents the reason for each day of the trip when no fishing occurs. The NF codes are listed in the Non-Fishing (NF) area on the log page.
• Number of hours spent searching per day.
• Record yes or no whether a spotter plane was used.
• Start time of each shot using the local time zone specified in 24 hour notation, eg record
4:15 pm as 1615.
• Record your latitude and longitude for each shot.
• If using poling method record the number of poles used.
Bait/Chum Details (if applicable)
Record the species of bait caught (list each species if more than one caught) and estimate the total weight caught in kilograms.
Catch Details

• The estimated weight of fish caught in kilograms.
• Pole method only; record the number of fish. Purse Seine
• Record what you estimate is the percentage of the school that you caught.
• Record the number of Southern Bluefin Tuna mortalities which occur during the purse seining operation.
• Record the estimated number of fish released during purse seine operations, if any.
Tow Details (Purse Seine Method)

Wildlife or Other Protected Species Interactions
At the foot of the logsheet are two tick boxes as to whether you did or did not have an interaction with any wildlife or other protected species on any of the shots recorded on the sheet. You must tick either the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ box. An interaction refers to any capture, entanglement, or damage to your gear or the animal by the gear or boat. If ‘Yes’ is ticked, enter the details of the animal/s and nature of each interaction on a separate ‘Wildlife and Other Protected Species’ form at the back of this book. Please send the completed forms to AFMA along with the logsheets they relate to. Remember to check for tags or bird bands.
Signature Box
Each logsheet must be signed and dated by the Master of the Boat (Skipper). The signature verifies that the information recorded in the logbook is an accurate record of the fishing operation including estimated weights.
Purse Seine and Pole Daily Fishing Log - For Southern Bluefin Tuna Only - TPB03A GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS
Important Information
This logbook must be aboard the boat nominated during all fishing operations.
All details must be completed on a shot by shot basis and the logbook
must be fully completed before the boat docks at the end of each trip.
You must account for every day that your fishing concession is in force regardless of whether you fish on that day or not, unless the boat is in port. This logbook should be completed from the day the boat leaves port till the day the boat returns to port.
Fisheries Regulations
Under Regulation 32 of the Fisheries Management Regulations, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has determined that this logbook must be completed for each boat for which a Fishing Concession is held entitling the holder to fish using the purse seine or pole fishing method in the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery.
Purpose
This logbook is designed for use when purse seine or pole fishing. It must provide a continuous record of fishing operations by Commonwealth concession holders in the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery. Accurate data collected in this logbook will provide essential information for research into and the management of Australian fisheries.
Who Should Use This Logbook?
The holder of the fishing concession is responsible for ensuring that this logbook is completed and that it is certified as complete and correct.
The master of the boat (skipper) must be the person completing this logbook. The
master of the boat (Skipper) must be an authorised agent for the concession holder, this authorisation must be in place before any fishing operations can take place. To authorise an agent the concession holder is required to complete an AFMA approved AA form, for further details contact AFMA.
Tag / Band Recapture Forms
At the back of the logbook are Tag / Band recapture forms. Should you catch any tagged fish or animals or banded birds, please record the details of the capture on one of these forms and return the original copy to the AFMA agent along with the tag or band.
If a tag or band is on a live animal, record the number and colour of the tag or band if possible, but leave the tag on the animal and release it.
Penalties
Fishing concession holders and authorised agents completing this logbook on their behalf are advised that:
(i) a failure by a fishing concession holder to ensure the completion of the logbook in accordance with these instructions;
(ii) the giving of false or misleading information in the logbook by the fishing concession holder or an authorised agent completing the logbook on their behalf; or
(iii) the recording or communicating by the fishing concession holder or anyone else of information in a logbook concerning the affairs of another person, or the giving by the fishing concession holder or anyone else to another person of a part of a logbook in which information is recorded, (unless the recording, communicating or giving is done in accordance with the Fisheries Management Act 1991, Fisheries Administration Act 1991
or the Fisheries Management Regulations 1992 or an order of court, tribunal or a person authorised to receive evidence)
may constitute serious offences under Commonwealth laws.
Concession holders are also advised that failure to ensure the completion of the logbook in accordance with the instructions may lead to suspension or cancellation of their concession.

Original logsheets must be returned to AFMA within 3 calendar days of the consignment being transferred/unloaded, either in the reply paid envelopes provided, posted to:
AFMA Licensing and Data Services
PO Box 7051
