Values

(a)

the place has significant heritage value to the nation because of the place's important in the course, or pattern, of Australia's natural or cultural history

As the original permanent office and home of the Australian Legation to Washington, the Australian Ambassador’s Residence is symbolic of the appointment of the first Australian diplomatic head of mission in a foreign country (excluding the United Kingdom as the ‘Mother Country’). It is also symbolic of the significant step in the transition of Australian foreign policy from being subsumed within British Empire foreign policy to the independent Australian foreign policy today and the gradual shift from the Australian-British relationship to the Australian-American relationship as the keystone of Australia’s foreign policy.

The values are represented in the attributes of the Residence as an identifiable site and use as an Australian diplomatic property and building.
