It is notified for general information that the Governor-General has made the following Determination regarding the Australian Sports Medal.

AUSTRALIAN SPORTS MEDAL

DETERMINATION

I, General the Honourable David Hurley, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, having received the approval of Her Majesty The Queen for the Australian Sports Medal, and acting under regulations 7 and 8 of the Australian Sports Medal Regulations hereby determine as follows:

Medal Design

The Australian Sports Medal design symbolises Australian sport, featuring the stars of the Southern Cross and lines depicting the athletics track at Stadium Australia, Sydney Olympic Park.

The Australian Sports Medal is made of nickel silver and is a circular shape, 38 millimetres in diameter and 3.2 millimetres in thickness measured at the rim. On the obverse are lines representing an athletics track with the Southern Cross located above. The Southern Cross, alternate running lanes and the outer rim are raised.

The design on the medal reverse features the continuation of the athletics track. In the top section of the medal, the words ‘AUSTRALIAN SPORTS MEDAL’ will appear in an arch shape, inside the rim of the medal. These words are to be in capital letters, and raised. The alternating lanes depicted in the athletics track are also raised.

The Australian Sports Medal is suspended from a ribbon by a ring connector made of nickel silver and 15 millimetres in diameter.

Miniature

The miniature of the Australian Sports Medal is a half-size replica of the Medal, suspended from a ribbon 16 millimetres wide, in the same fashion as the main medal.

Ribbon

The ribbon of the Australian Sports Medal is 32 millimetres wide and features the national colours of green and gold. The ribbon is divided into alternating stripes starting from the right edge of ribbon on the obverse view with gold (5mm), green (2mm), gold (1.5mm), green (1mm), gold (1mm), green (1mm), gold (1mm), green (1.5mm) and gold (18mm) to left edge of ribbon. The Medal ribbon is folded inwards towards its nadir to create a 12 millimetre centre which will accommodate the ring connector.

Wearing

The Australian Sports Medal is worn on the left breast on all occasions when full-size orders, decorations and medals are worn. The miniature medal is worn on all occasions when miniatures of orders, decorations and medals are worn.

Order of Wear

The Australian Sports Medal is worn in accordance with the Order of Wearing Australian Honours and Awards as approved by the Sovereign in the same order as Coronation, Jubilee, Remembrance and Commemorative medals (in the order of date of receipt).
