Tasmania Class 1 & 3 Heavy Vehicle Special- Purpose Logs Dimension Exemption Notice 2024 (No.1)
Purpose
Authorising Provision
2. This Notice is made under section 117 of the Heavy Vehicle National Law as in force in each participating jurisdiction.
Title
3. This Notice may be cited as the Tasmania Class 1 & 3 Heavy Vehicle Special- Purpose Logs Dimension Exemption Notice 2024 (No.1).
Commencement
4. This Notice commences on 10 February 2024.
Expiry
5. This Notice expires on 9 February 2029.
Definitions
6. Unless otherwise stated, words and expressions used in this Notice have the same meanings as those defined in the Heavy Vehicle National Law.
7. In this Notice –
’special-purpose log’ means a log that is to be used in a special application such as a wire carrying pole or jetty pile, or in sawn-timber applications, but does not include any log that is to be processed by chipping, shredding or grinding.
Application
8. This Notice applies in Tasmania.
9. This Notice applies to a combination consisting of—
(a) a prime mover and a single semitrailer; or
(b) a truck known as a pole erector and a pole-type trailer
—being used to transport special purpose logs (a ‘relevant combination’).
Exemption from prescribed dimension requirements
10. This Notice exempts a relevant combination from the dimension limits specified in section 3(1)(a) and section 5(1) of Schedule 6 of the Regulation.
Condition – Maximum permissible dimensions
11. A relevant combination, inclusive of its load, must not be longer than 30m.
12. The rear overhang of the trailer, inclusive of its load, must not be more than 6.5m.
Other Conditions
13. If the relevant combination is used in the daytime, a brightly coloured red flag must be affixed to the rearmost point of the load.
14. If the relevant combination is used at night, it must have side markers and rear markers that are fitted and displayed in accordance with section 5(1)(a) and (b) of Schedule 8 of the Regulation.
15. If the relevant combination, inclusive of its load, is longer than 22m, it must display—
(a) an oversize warning sign at the front and rear of the combination that complies with Subdivision 3 of Division 2 of Part 3 of Schedule 8 of the Regulation; and
(b) if the combination is being used at night, a warning light attached to the vehicle in accordance with section 5(1)(c) of Schedule 8 of the Regulation and that complies with the requirements of Division 1 of Part 3 of Schedule 8 of the Regulation.
16. A relevant combination must not be used if visibility is less than 250m in the daytime or if the headlights of a vehicle approaching within 250m cannot be seen at night.
17. If the relevant combination, inclusive of its load, is longer than 26m, it must be accompanied by a pilot vehicle.
Condition - Areas or routes
18. A relevant combination complying with the conditions of this Notice may use all roads in Tasmania.
